After sophomore year at college I went to stay with my brother Ben in NYC for the summer, and after getting freelance work sewing at the Muppets I didn't go back to school. I got into children's books --writing and illustrating, a few years later, and was hooked. My first book came out in 1990, and that's been my main focus ever since (I know there are lots of picture-book-aged kids out there! if you're interested you can see my books by doing a Maggie Smith search on Amazon or B&N.com under "books").

I met Peter, also an artist, six years ago in New York. A few years ago we bought a house up here in Westerly, RI, while he was finishing up a job outsite NY. It's been nice to be back in New England, except for the winters.....
